“Half the wealth of England rides on the back of the sheep.”

The history of the Cotswolds is a story of sheep’s wool and limestone.

For 500 years the sheep created the rolling Cotswold landscape, and money from the wool enabled the building of the mellow limestone churches, manor houses and Cotswold cottages we love so well. Generations of shepherds, wool merchants, weavers, quarrymen and stonemasons have all made their mark on this land, and, here in Filkins, Cotswold Woollen Weavers continues in this ancient tradition.

Cotswold Woollen Weavers in Filkins: Centre of the universe!

Our village of FILKINS lies on an ancient route from the high Cotswolds to the Thames, and beyond to the South Coast. ‘Filkins’ is probably the ‘Ing’ or meadow of Filica the Saxon, a local chieftain who settled here over a thousand years ago. You can find out more about what has happened in the village since(!) by clicking HERE.

Filkins is all mellow, Cotswold limestone; we’ve about 450 inhabitants, there is a great pub (The Five Alls), two very interesting churches, and it is a beautiful place to explore when you visit us.
